What’s Happening in Music:

The 2nd grade had a wonderful concert! 5th grade has been reviewing information for 6th grade music options including, band, orchestra, and choir. 4th grade has been preparing for the recorder and Washington festival concerts. 3rd grade wrapped up talking about the different instrument families and started looking at concert songs.

Question of the Month:

Who was named "The First Lady of Song"?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

Here is a link to a little bit about her life.

These are some links to some of her performances

It Don't Mean a Thing - Ella and Duke

One Note Samba - Ella

Can't We Be Friends - Ella and Frank

*Remember that Ella Fitzgerald was known for improvisation (making up the notes on the spot) She sings on mostly vocables (consonants and vowels) instead of words when improvising.

Music Advocacy:

A Harris Poll released on June 13, 2005, found that 93 percent of Americans agree that the arts are vital to providing a well-rounded education for children. In addition, 54 percent rated the importance of arts education at a ten on a scale of one to ten.
